Is Madrona safe?
For most crime types, Madrona is widely considered one of Seattle’s safest neighborhoods. Brian’s overall opinion is that this neighborhood is one of the best, if you are looking to live in Seattle proper, but place high priority on a low crime area.
Facts and resources for Madrona
A Native Forest in the City: Madrona includes a 9.2‑acre forested hillside called Madrona Woods, part of Madrona Park. It’s named both for the neighborhood and the native Pacific madrona trees that grow there.
The Friends of Madrona Woods have done extensive restoration: removing invasive species (ivy, holly, laurel, blackberries), replanting native flora, rebuilding trails, adding water cascades.
Madrona Park & Beach — Lifeguarded swim beach, natural trails
The park is ~31.2 acres, includes a swimming beach, picnic sites, restrooms, playground, paths, and a ravine with creek (Madrona Creek).
It is bisected by Lake Washington Blvd, so you get a mix of wooded hillside + open lake views + trails.
There’s a current project to renovate the play area at Madrona Park Beach.
Rich with distinct historic architecture
Example: The Richard A. Ballinger House (built ~1902‑03) is a Colonial Revival home along Lake Washington. Ballinger was once Mayor of Seattle and later U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
The neighborhood has many homes built before 1940 in a variety of styles (Queen Anne, Craftsman, Colonial, Tudor), especially on the hill with views. Madrona–Sally Goldmark Branch Library — More Than Just Books

Howell Park – Quiet Hidden Beach and Cultural Footnote
Known in local lore and culture for use as an informal nude beach; it has a queer history of being used by gay men. It’s relatively low-key and less trafficked than bigger parks.
Madrona: Origins as a Streetcar Suburb & Community Hub
In the early days, Madrona was somewhat remote from central Seattle. To attract residents, Madrona Beach Park was developed in 1889, as a destination for city folk with a free streetcar to bring attention to the area. The developers hoped the visitors would fall in love with the area and buy property in Madrona.
Strong Neighborhood Organization & Local Events
The Madrona Neighborhood Association is volunteer‑run, with a mission of strengthening community, organizing events, beautification, etc.
