Facts and resources for Denny Triangle

  1. It used to be a big hill—literally removed

    • The neighborhood’s flat terrain is artificial: originally there was Denny Hill, one of Seattle’s “seven hills.” The Denny Regrade project removed it in stages from ~1897 through 1930, using methods ranging from hydraulic sluicing into Elliott Bay to steam shovels. The final stage (Regrade No. 2, 1929–30) removed the last portion east of 5th Avenue. Learn more about the regrade history: https://www.historylink.org/file/21204

  2. Neighborhood names

    • “Denny Triangle” is a somewhat recent name (~1990s), other still used names include “Denny Regrade” and “Cascade.” Interestingly, official city maps do not always define the neighborhood the same way.

  3. Recent massive development boom and density growth

    • The neighborhood has seen a rapid increase in high-rise residential and mixed-use towers since the 2010s. Many of these projects add several thousand new housing units.
